On the evening of March 2, US media reported that Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric (GE), passed away at the age of 84.

Who is Jack Welch? In the MBA business world many years ago, the story of Welch leading GE to prosperity is definitely a classic case. His three books, "The Autobiography of Jack Welch", "Winning" and "The Essence of Business", are also must-reads for every professional manager.

In that era, the only business genius who could be compared with him was probably former IBM CEO Lou Gerstner and his book "Elephants Can Dance".

Jack Welch served as CEO of GE from 1981 to 2001. He transformed GE from a company with a market value of $12 billion into a giant with a market value of $410 billion (some say $480 billion). Its market value at the time was second only to Microsoft, the leader in the Internet sector. Its annual revenue reached $140 billion and its net profit was $12.7 billion, ranking first in the world.

In addition to driving the company's performance and market value up, Jack Welch also promoted the 6-Sigma quality standard, significantly reducing GE's defective rate to 34 per 10 million.

To achieve such great results, Jack Welch also had extraordinary management methods. His work style was vigorous and resolute. The company's organization carried out drastic reforms. All businesses that failed to rank among the top three in the industry were cut off, and a large number of employees were also laid off. The maximum number of GE employees dropped from 410,000 to 230,000.

Because of his ruthless layoffs, Jack Welch was even nicknamed "Neutron Jack", which means he was like a neutron bomb that only kills people but does not harm objects.

Despite this, Jack Welch's success in business eventually made him "deified". He was often selected as the best CEO by the media and was once called the greatest professional manager in the United States in the 20th century and the world's number one CEO.
