Renesas Electronics Launches Buck-Boost DC/DC Converter with Ultra-Low Quiescent Current Ideal for Powering Sensors, MCUs, Wireless Devices, and Other Components
Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a global supplier of semiconductor solutions, announced the launch of the ISL9122A, a flexible buck-boost switching regulator with bypass mode that provides ultra-low quiescent current (IQ) and is suitable for powering sensors, microcontrollers (MCUs), wireless devices, and other system components. The ISL9122A supports 1.8V to 5.5V battery power and can extend the battery life of smart IoT devices powered by button cells, lithium batteries, and multi-series alkaline battery packs. Target applications include wireless headphones, fitness equipment, smart watches, water and gas meters, portable medical devices, and a variety of battery-powered smart IoT devices.
The ISL9122A buck-boost switching regulator has an I2C interface and a programmable 25mV step to achieve dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) to optimize system power consumption. The regulator has a maximum output voltage of 5.375V, which maximizes the performance of IoT devices with RF functions over the entire battery voltage range. Its PFM and PWM functions maximize efficiency over the entire output current range. In forced PWM mode, the regulator always maintains a switching frequency of 2.5MHz to improve system EMI performance.

Both the ISL9122A buck-boost regulator and the recently released ISL9123 step-down regulator are ultra-low IQ switching regulators that can power Renesas’ RL78 family of 8/16-bit ultra-low-power MCUs, the RA family of 32-bit MCUs based on Arm ® Cortex ® -M cores, and the RE family of embedded controllers for wearable devices and energy harvesting applications.
