Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) today announced the launch of the Micron 9550 NVMe™ SSD, a data center SSD that delivers industry-leading performance, superior AI workload performance and energy efficiency.1 The Micron 9550 SSD integrates Micron’s own controller, NAND, DRAM and firmware, demonstrating Micron’s deep expertise and innovation. This integrated solution brings industry-leading performance, energy efficiency and security to data center operators.
The Micron 9550 SSD delivers outstanding performance with a sequential read rate of 14.0 GB/s and a sequential write rate of 10.0 GB/s, which is up to 67% higher than similar SSDs in the industry, bringing industry-leading performance to demanding workloads such as AI. In addition, its random read rate reaches 3,300 KIOPS, up to 35% higher than competing products, and its random write rate reaches 400 KIOPS, up to 33% higher than competing products.
AI workloads require high-performance storage solutions. The 9550 SSD unlocks exceptional performance for AI use cases with its superior sequential and random read and write rates. For example, large language models (LLMs) require high sequential read rates, while graph neural networks (GNNs) require high random read performance. The Micron 9550 SSD excels in key AI workloads, reducing workload completion time by up to 33% and accelerating feature aggregation by up to 60% in GNN training with Big Accelerator Memory (BaM). 2 In addition, the Micron 9550 SSD delivers up to 34% higher throughput for NVIDIA Magnum IO™ GPUDirect® Storage. 3
Alvaro Toledo, Vice President and General Manager of Micron’s Data Center Storage Business Unit, said:
“ The Micron 9550 SSD marks a significant leap forward for data center storage, delivering an incredible 3.3 million IOPS while consuming up to 43% less power than competing SSDs for AI workloads such as GNN and LLM training. This combination of higher performance and exceptional power efficiency sets a new standard for AI storage solutions and demonstrates Micron’s unwavering commitment to leading the AI revolution.”
Rob Davis, vice president of storage technology at NVIDIA, said:
“Improving data center efficiency and performance for AI workloads is critical to reducing costs and ensuring operational reliability for businesses around the world. By integrating NVIDIA technology, the Micron 9550 SSD provides powerful storage support for AI. ”
Raghu Nambiar, corporate vice president of Datacenter Ecosystem and Solutions at AMD, said:
“Innovation in storage technology is critical for latency-sensitive workloads such as AI and mission-critical enterprise applications. Our deep collaboration with Micron and partners across the ecosystem will ensure the new 9550 SSD is fully utilized on AMD EPYC-based servers.”
Debendra Das Sharma, Intel senior fellow and chief I/O architect, said:
“Intel is pleased to see Micron enter the PCIe 5.0 market with the Micron 9550 NVMe SSD. This PCIe 5.0 SSD is compatible with Intel’s PCIe 5.0 processor platforms, specifically the 4th Gen Intel Xeon , 5th Gen Intel Xeon and Intel Xeon 6 processors . Micron is an important ecosystem partner to Intel and has a long history of providing well-integrated PCIe solutions for Intel-based platforms, including solutions that support Intel Virtual RAID on CPU (Intel VROC). In addition , PCIe 5.0 compatibility allows for seamless integration of the Intel Gaudi AI Accelerator, boosting performance and expanding the capabilities of AI systems. ”
The 9550 SSD is equipped with Micron's self-developed vertically integrated architecture, providing flexible design options and advanced security features. The hard drive supports NVMe 2.0 and OCP 2.0, and has OCP 2.5 telemetry capabilities, which can achieve advanced performance and health monitoring, thereby simplifying large-scale deployment and management in data centers. The 9550 SSD is designed with end-to-end security in mind, has self-encrypting hard drive (SED) capabilities, complies with the Security Protocol and Data Model standard (SPDM 1.2), and provides stable data encryption functions and other key security features. For customers who require higher security standards, options that comply with FIPS 140-3 Level 2 and TAA standards are also available.
The 9550 SSD offers a variety of storage capacities from 3.2TB to 30.72TB and supports U.2, E1.S and E3.S form factors, providing a broad portfolio for current PCIe 5.0 server designs to achieve excellent performance, high flexibility and scalability. This SSD is designed to meet the stringent requirements of top OEM manufacturers and hyperscale data centers and is currently sampling worldwide. At the same time, it is also part of Micron's industry-leading data center storage and memory portfolio, which can meet the growing needs of AI, high-performance computing (HPC) and many other workloads.
