Microchip's PIC32 family expands with lowest power, most cost-effective and core-independent peripherals
New PIC32MM family for IoT, consumer, industrial control and motor control applications
Microchip Technology Inc., a leading global supplier of integrated microcontrollers, mixed signals, analog devices and flash patent solutions, recently released the company's lowest power and most cost-effective 32-bit PIC32 microcontroller (MCU) series. The Microchip PIC32MM series devices launched this time fill the gap between the company's popular products PIC24F XLP series and PIC32MX series. In addition, this series is also the first PIC32 device to integrate core-independent peripherals, designed to eliminate CPU workloads and thus reduce power consumption and system design costs. Microchip also provides Microchip MPLAB® Code Configurator (MCC) support for the PIC32MM series devices to simplify and accelerate the design process.
Today, embedded applications in the fields of Internet of Things (IoT), consumer, industrial control and motor control all favor flexible MCU products with lower power consumption, higher cost performance and smaller size. For applications that require low power consumption and longer battery life, the PIC32MM series devices can have a current as low as 500 nA in sleep mode. Space-constrained applications can benefit from its small 4x4 mm package. The core-independent peripherals integrated in the PIC32MM series devices include a configurable logic cell (CLC) and a multiple output capture/compare/PWM module (MCCP), which helps to realize sensorless BLDC motor control applications.
“With volume pricing starting at $0.60, currents as low as 500 nA in sleep mode and a compact 4x4 mm package, the new PIC32MM family is an irresistible solution for budget, power and size constrained applications,” said Joe Thomsen, vice president of Microchip’s MCU16 division. “Supported by the popular MPLAB Code Configurator tool, these PIC32MM devices are easy to set up, accelerating design time to quickly respond to changing market conditions.”
Development Support
To speed up the evaluation and development process, Microchip has launched a new PIC32MM processor plug-in module (part number: MA320020 ) that can be plugged into the Explorer 16 development board ( part number: DM240001 ). At the same time, the Microchip MPLAB ecosystem, including MPLAB X IDE and XC32 compiler, also supports the entire PIC32MM series of devices. The MPLAB code configurator, which is an MPLAB X plug-in , helps simplify peripheral settings, device configuration and pin mapping.
Additionally, Microchip is offering a limited-time promotion where if you purchase a $25 PIC32MM PIM (Part Number: MA320020), you can purchase an Explorer 16 Development Board (Part Number: DM240001) for $89.99, a total savings of $40.
Availability
PIC32MM series devices are now in mass production and are available in 20-pin QFN and SSOP packages, 28-pin uQFN, QFN, SOIC, SSOP and SPDIP packages, 36-pin QFN packages and 40-pin uQFN packages. The new device flash memory capacity is available in 16 KB, 32KB and 64 KB specifications.
