Gao Qiquan, the global executive vice president of Tsinghua Unigroup, who is known as the godfather of Taiwan's DRAM, officially left Tsinghua Unigroup on October 1 after his five-year contract expired. Gao Qiquan said that after completing his phased tasks, he would do his own thing.

The industry pointed out that Kao Chi-quan would wait until Tsinghua Unigroup officially announced the news before explaining his next plan. It is highly likely that he will continue to engage in semiconductor-related businesses in Taiwan, and he does not rule out starting his own business and engaging in the recycled wafer business.

Kao Chi-Chuan was the director of TSMC's 6-inch fab and participated in the establishment of Macronix Electronics. Kao Chi-Chuan was recruited as the executive vice president of Nanya Technology in 1995, and led Nanya Technology to gradually transform several technology generations. After the joint venture with Infineon Technologies in 2004, he served as the general manager of Nanya Technology and took over as the chairman of Nanya Technology.

However, the DRAM market has experienced a lot of ups and downs. In the past decade, Qimonda, an independent DRAM factory split by Infineon, and Elpida, a DRAM factory jointly formed by Japanese companies, have successively declared bankruptcy. Kao Chi-Chuan led Nanya Technology and Inotera to resolve their operating difficulties and get rid of their operating decline, and established a technical cooperation relationship with Micron. However, the merger of Micron and Inotera was not started and completed until Kao Chi-Chuan left.

Kao Chi-Chuan has been working in Taiwan's DRAM industry for more than 30 years. He retired as chairman of Inotera in October 2015 and then joined Tsinghua Unigroup, which caused a stir in the industry. Kao Chi-Chuan originally hoped that by joining Tsinghua Unigroup, he could combine the advantages of both sides of the Taiwan Strait to build a joint memory front and integrate the global memory map.

Gao Qiquan helped Tsinghua Unigroup complete the merger of Wuhan Xinxin and NAND Flash, and established Yangtze Memory Technologies and completed the 3D NAND technology blueprint and capacity deployment. In October 2017, Yangtze Memory Technologies announced that it had successfully completed the development of China's own 3D NAND technology through independent research and development and international cooperation. In 2019, it released its own Xtacking architecture 64-layer TLC 3D NAND and entered mass production. This year, it began to produce 128-layer 3D NAND.

At the end of August last year, Kao Chi-Chuan handed over the post of Wuhan Xinxin's general manager and CEO to Sun Shiwei, the former CEO of UMC and current executive vice president of Tsinghua Unigroup. Kao Chi-Chuan then became the CEO of Tsinghua Unigroup's DRAM business group. However, as the US-China trade war began, although Kao Chi-Chuan had taken over Tsinghua Unigroup's DRAM business, it takes a long time to independently develop DRAM. Tsinghua Unigroup's DRAM layout has just started, and Tsinghua Unigroup's Chongqing DRAM plant will not start construction until the end of the year. Kao Chi-Chuan has already chosen to leave, which has also attracted great attention in the industry.

Gao Qiquan's five-year contract with Tsinghua Unigroup has expired, and he will start a new career after he officially leaves on October 1. Gao Qiquan said on the 1st that he will do his own thing in the future, and it is not convenient to say more now, and everyone will know when the time comes.
