Everyone is curious about how much other people are paid. There is probably only one reason why people don't ask: company penalty regulations.

Generally speaking, no one would publish their income details, after all, this is also a personal privacy. But recently, about 400 Microsoft employees are sharing their salary slips online in order to better determine whether the compensation they receive is "fair."

At the same time, 400 people shared their income details, which is probably a huge movement! This movement originated from a private Facebook group. We know that there are many interest groups on Facebook similar to Baidu Tieba and Douban Group, some of which are public and some are private.

The group we are talking about today is called Young Microsoft FTE, which is a private group. FTE is the abbreviation of full-time employee, so the full name of this group is "Young Microsoft Full-time Employees".

These young employees gathered in this group and talked freely about their old company Microsoft. They also created a shared Google spreadsheet document and posted their income details in it, with the heading "Anonymously share your salary information so that we can get more compensation together."

The data points detailed in the form include work experience, length of time at Microsoft, performance-based salary increase percentages, base salary, and stock and cash awards. It is worth noting that some employees also have special stock allocations, signing bonuses or milestone achievements.

The spreadsheet does not specify gender, so it cannot reflect the salary differences between male and female employees in the workplace. Although these 400 employees are just a drop in the bucket compared to Microsoft's 144,000 employees, they are still a very valuable reference for revealing the current treatment of Microsoft employees.

One Microsoft employee told OneZero that internal salary sharing is an annual event at Microsoft this time of year, when many employees receive notices of pay raises or promotions.

A former employee provided OneZero with access to the form, and a current employee in the Young Microsoft Full-Timers group came forward to confirm the document's authenticity.

Microsoft did not respond to requests for comment.

Generally speaking, in most technology companies, the difference in salary is mainly linked to the difference in qualifications. The higher the level, the more power the employee has and the higher the salary. Microsoft employees have levels from 59 to 80, while Amazon employees have levels from L4 to L10, and Facebook employees have levels from E3 to E9.

A typical example on the form is a Level 62 software engineer located in Washington state who has been working at this level for one year and has been with Microsoft for three years. They report a full five years of experience and have not received a promotion this year. Their base salary is $150,000, and they received a $20,000 cash bonus and another $15,000 in stock.

As employees advance to higher levels, more of their compensation comes from stock. At level 66, Microsoft employees report that nearly 40% of their compensation is in the form of cash and stock bonuses. While cash bonuses remain a relatively stable percentage of salary over the course of a Microsoft employee's career, stock compensation can rise to nearly 20% of annual income, according to crowdsourced data.

Employees also told OneZero that a fairly common strategy is to leave first, then go to other large companies in Seattle, such as Amazon, or even startups, and then return to Microsoft to get a higher salary.

While there are few data points about Microsoft engineers working in India, crowdsourced data shows that their compensation is far lower than their counterparts in Washington, D.C. A typical Indian programmer says he or she makes less than $50,000 a year, while an American with similar qualifications makes three times as much per year, and bonus compensation is up to 10 times as much.

This practice is becoming more common within Microsoft.

Microsoft employees say Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella has gained a sense of goodwill and progressive culture internally, but persistent issues such as sexual harassment and discrimination have led employees to speak out and demand change in large internal forums.

OneZero argues that pay sharing is a legal form of unionization that fits in with the desire for more fairness and transparency around discrimination and compensation issues. Aside from the grand vision of contributing to pay equality, there really is no upside to individuals uploading and sharing their own private salary information.
