Today's electronic products are getting smaller and smaller, but their functions are becoming more and more numerous and their performance is getting higher and higher. This brings challenges to product design, which is not only reflected in the more compact internal design of the product, but also puts forward more stringent requirements on external connectivity, requiring the corresponding connectors to keep up with the pace of technological progress. Such challenges are particularly prominent in data center and server applications.
There are two important technical paths to meet this challenge: one is to use a hybrid connector, that is, a single connector that contains both power and signal terminals to meet the needs of power and signal transmission in one stop; the other is to "compress" the connector terminal spacing as much as possible to "slim down" the connector.
Following the above technical path, Amphenol ICC has launched the Mini Cool Edge connector with a terminal pitch of only 0.60 mm. This is a 0.60 mm high-density, high-speed card edge connector suitable for a new generation of small systems. This fine pitch solution supports a variety of board-to-board applications such as right angles, mezzanines, and coplanar, and provides cable interconnect options. This one-piece connector can be used for a variety of applications within the server, such as expansion cards, network cards, and solid-state drives. This connector supports 1.6 mm thick mating boards, making it suitable for most board-to-board applications. With a current of 1.1A and up to 12 power pins, it is ideal for medium power application requirements.
From the adjective "Mini", we can easily see that this connector has a more "mini" appearance compared to the standard model; at the same time, Mini Cool Edge is not ambiguous in performance and can support high-speed differential pairs up to 56Gb/s PAM4!

Let’s explore what amazing capabilities this connector has in its small size…
Cool Edge: A paradigm shift in hybrid connectors
Before exploring the Mini Cool Edge connector, let's take a look at the family it belongs to:
Cool Edge
.
Amphenol ICC's Cool Edge product series is a hybrid card edge solution for data centers and servers. Because it is a hybrid connector of "power terminal + signal terminal", Cool Edge is considered to be a space-saving alternative solution. In terms of transmission performance, the Cool Edge product series complies with high-speed standards such as PCIe and SAS/SATA, and has excellent signal integrity under high-speed transmission conditions, so it has become a "favorite" for applications such as data centers, servers, and SSDs.
After years of development, the Cool Edge product series has now become a large and thriving family (see Figure 2 ), covering the needs of user designs in terms of different shapes, spacings, and transmission rates. It is no exaggeration to say that it is a model of hybrid card edge connectors for data centers and servers.

New classic: Mini version of Cool Edge
The Mini Cool Edge connector is a new product in this product family. It not only inherits the excellent "genes" of the Cool Edge connector family, but also has its own unique advantages. Specifically, there are the following three points:
▼
miniaturization
From the Cool Edge product family product roadmap, we can see that this series of connectors has been continuously reducing its terminal spacing to meet the needs of miniaturized applications. The Mini Cool Edge connector is a "mini" version with a 0.6mm pitch developed on the basis of the 0.8mm and 0.65mm pitch standard connectors. Although it is a mini version of the standard connector, it has better functions. They are denser and faster, supporting a new generation of miniaturized systems.
▼
high performance
What is very rare is that while the Mini Cool Edge is "slimming down", its performance has not been compromised, but it has gone a step further. From the perspective of signal transmission, the connector adopts a discrete pin design and can support single-ended and high-speed differential pairs up to 32Gb/S NRZ, 56Gb/S PAM4 (the Micro Cool Edge in the same series has a terminal of only 0.50 mm, but the transmission rate is slightly inferior, at 16GT/s). From the perspective of power transmission, the Mini Cool Edge has up to 12 power pins, and the current carrying capacity of each pin is 1.1A, which is fully capable of handling medium power applications.

Wide application
Mini Cool Edge complies with SFF-TA-1002, Gen Z, EDSFF and OCP NIC 3.0 specifications, and can adapt to changes in current and future technology standards. This series of connectors offers vertical, right-angle, straddle installation, and orthogonal options, suitable for a variety of board-to-board application scenarios such as right-angle, mezzanine and coplanar. At the same time, this Mini Cool Edge also supports 1.6 mm thick mating boards and different board-to-board and module applications - such as FPGA, SSD and NIC - with strong expansion space.
We summarize the features of Mini Cool Edge as follows:
Supports single-ended and high-speed differential pairs up to 32G NRZ and 56G PAM4
Available in vertical, right-angle, straddle-mount and orthogonal options
Signal pin pitch is 0.60 mm, rated at 1.1A, with up to 12 pins for power applications
Signal pin options: 56, 84, 140 and 168
Compact size
Used as space-saving connector
Discrete pin design
Supports 1.6 mm thick mating board
Can provide power for module cards
Mechanical behavior:
- Plug and unplug 200 times
- Insertion force (max): 0.6N/pin
