[Theme Month] What is the difference between a 0Ω resistor and a direct connection on a circuit board? [Copy link]

Why use 0Ω resistor? Is there any difference with direct connection?

It should be for the convenience of testing, but not necessarily. You can only know the purpose by looking at the specific situation.  Details Published on 2018-6-15 13:37

There is no electrical difference. If you want to modify the circuit and add a component, it is more convenient to use a 0Ω resistor.

Yes, 0 ohms is for the convenience of subsequent hardware debugging and function expansion.

It may be convenient for debugging, or it may be single-point grounding, depending on the specific location.

1. It is convenient for hardware debugging and reserves a pad; 2. It prevents PCB wiring conflicts; 3. It acts as a fuse, which is equivalent to a fuse and can protect the system circuit; 4. Single-point grounding for analog and digital grounds; 5. It replaces jumpers and reduces costs.

If it is an aluminum substrate, 0 ohm can be used as a jumper. If it is inconvenient to use wire welding, it is impossible to plug in welding. If it is FR-4 0 ohm, it can be used as a jumper or a reserved test point. It is more convenient in the PCB plate making process. SMD direct patch is more convenient and simpler than jumper, and has higher stability. Reduce safety hazards.

Can also be used as a fuse

The most important function is to be used as a fuse. I encountered a foreign board before, and my colleague connected the power supply incorrectly, which only burned an imported 0-ohm resistor. I just replaced it.

There are many uses for 0 ohm resistors. You can see them by searching on Baidu. But what I want to add is that based on practical experience, 0 ohms should not be used for high-frequency signals and their power supply circuits, as it may cause unnecessary trouble!

1. Use 0 ohm resistors to easily measure the signal of this network. 2. When necessary, you can replace the 0 ohm resistor with a magnetic bead, inductor or other device. It is inconvenient to run the wire directly. 3. If the 0 ohm resistor is used in the power supply line, you can disconnect the resistor and connect an ammeter in series to measure the current value.

It seems that everyone has summarized it. I would like to add that when measuring, you can remove the 0 ohm resistor and connect an ammeter in series to measure the current passing through this line.

Supplement: Sometimes the design uses inductors, but because they are hard to find, 0 ohm resistors are used instead. For example, analog ground and digital ground, as well as analog power and digital power, are sometimes used to pass the wires below. Some electrical appliances use single-sided boards, and costs can be saved. Multiple resistors are meaningless. 0 ohms are used more often in jumper functions on development board circuits. Refer to ST's nucleo board
