TI's three new TMS320 DSP series and OMAP series
1. TMS320C2000 - the best DSP for control, which can replace the old C1X and C2X.
The TMS320C20X series DSP chips have the following characteristics:
(1) Strong processing power: the shortest instruction cycle is 25nm, and the computing processing power reaches 40MIPS.
(2) Large FLASH memory on the chip: TMS320C20X is the first DSP chip to use on-chip FLASH memory. FLASH memory is more flexible than ROM and cheaper than RAM. TMS320F206 and TMS320F207 have 32KB FLASH memory and 4.5KB RAM on the chip.
(3) Low power consumption of the chip: TMS320C20X series DSP chips consume 1.9mA current per MIPS when working at 5V, and 1.1mA current per MIPS when working at 3.3V. 4) Flexible resource configuration of the chip.
The TMS320C2000 series DSP chips are low-priced, have high performance and functions suitable for the control field, so they can be widely used in industrial automation, motor control, motion control, power electronics, household appliances and other fields. Now there is a trend of focusing on the following two directions:
(1) C20X16-bit fixed-point DSP, with a speed of 20MIPS, mainly used in telephones, digital cameras, vending machines, etc., among which: F206 has flash memory.
(2) C24X16-bit fixed-point DSP, with a speed of 20MIPS, used for digital motor control, industrial automation, power conversion systems, air conditioners, etc. 2.
TMS320C5000 - low-power high-performance DSP, 16-bit fixed point, speed 40~200MIPS.
The main uses are wired and wireless communications, IP, portable information systems, pagers, hearing aids, etc. TMS320C54XX series DSP chips have the following characteristics:
(1): Fast computing speed: Its computing speed can reach 500MIPS.
(2) Optimized CPU structure.
(3) Low power consumption of the chip: The DSP core of TMS320C54XX can work at 3.3, 2.5, 1.8V or even lower voltage, which is particularly suitable for wireless mobile devices.
(4) The chip has intelligent peripherals: it provides a multi-channel buffered serial port. And the host HPI for communicating with the external processor.
At present, there are three new members in the C5000 series. One is C5402, which is a cheap DSP with a speed of 100MIPS. The on-chip storage space is slightly smaller, with 16K RAM and 4K ROM. The main application objects are wireless modems, new generation PDAs, Internet phones and other telephone systems, and consumer electronic products. The second is C5420, which has two DSP cores, a speed of 200MIPS, 200K on-chip RAM, and a power consumption of 0.32mA/MIPS. When working at full speed of 200MIPS, it does not exceed 120mW, which is the DSP with the lowest power consumption in the industry. C5420 is the most integrated fixed-point DSP today. It is suitable for multi-channel base stations, servers, modems, telephone systems and other occasions that require high performance, low power consumption and small size. The third is C5416, which is the first of TI's 0.15μm devices. It has a speed of 160MIPS and three multi-channel buffered serial ports (McBSPs). It can be directly connected to T1 or E1 lines without external logic circuits and has 128K on-chip RAM. Its application targets are VoIP, communication servers, PBX (private branch exchange) and computer telephone systems.
3. TMS320C6000 - This is a high-performance DSP launched by TI in February 1997. It combines all the advantages of current DSPs:
(1) It has the best cost-effectiveness and low power consumption.
(2) It runs fast: the minimum instruction cycle is 3.3ns and the computing power is 2400MIPS.
(3) Different instruction sets: Several execution units are combined in one instruction. Combined with its unique internal structure, it gives full play to the independent operation capabilities of each execution unit integrated inside.
(4) A large amount of on-chip memory and wide range of addressing capabilities: The chip integrates up to 512K words of program memory and 512K words of data memory, and has a 32-bit external memory interface.
(5) Intelligent peripherals: It integrates 4-16 DMA interfaces, 2-3 multi-channel buffered serial ports, 2 32-bit timers, etc. Due to its extremely high performance, the TMS320C6000 series can be widely used in the communication field, mainly in: digital mobile communications, personal communication systems, personal digital assistants, digital wireless communications, wireless data communications, and portable Internet audio processors.
In the old TI DSP series, the floating-point C30 is still the main product promoted by TI, so its price does not increase every year like other old series. TI is also making performance improvements on this model and manufacturing low-cost models. For example, the recently launched C33 uses a 0.18μm manufacturing process, has 1M RAM, and a speed of 120Mflops, which is twice that of the old product, and the price is only US$5. The higher speed 150Mflops is US$8. C33 is code-compatible with other C3X devices, so users can protect their software environment and reduce development time when they switch to new devices.
4. OMAP (Open Multimedia Applications Platform)
This is an application processor architecture designed by TI to support third-generation (3G) wireless terminal applications. The OMAP processor platform provides the bandwidth and functions required for language, data and multimedia, and can provide excellent performance for high-end 3G wireless devices with extremely low power consumption. The OMAP embedded processor series includes application processors and integrated baseband application processors, and is currently widely used in real-time multimedia data processing, voice recognition systems, Internet communications, wireless communications, PDAs, Web notepads, medical devices and other fields.
